Today, we have breaking news for Twilight fans that is best classified as good, bad and possibly a bit weird. And all of it comes courtesy of fast-rising, in-demand young star Ashley Greene.

The good news: Ashley is joining Kellan Lutz in the lacrosse drama we broke the news on last month. “It’s called ‘Warrior,’ ” Greene beamed when we caught up with her at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Salutes Young Hollywood event.

Twilighters were named MTV News’ Woman of the Year because their obsession with the books, movies and actors laid the groundwork for what is now a phenomenon rivaling Harry Potter and Star Wars. And their undeniable anticipation for the next film, “New Moon,” only means that their power and influence will continue to grow.

Sure, there are a handful of guys out there who are also devoted to the romance between Bella and Edward, but the dedicated ladies who eat, sleep and breathe the books proved to be the driving force behind the movie’s success. Two of the film’s stars, Taylor Lautner and Ashley Greene, couldn’t agree more with our pick for Woman of 2008.

Ashley attended a new event in LA, California last night. She went to the HFPA Salute To Young Hollywood Party. Only two cute pictures so far…

Check out this really amazing article of Ashley on Jacksonville.com. She talks about her hometown, says she wants to be in an action film (she really wants to be a Bond girl, how cool is that!) and her family talks a bit about Ash too. It’s really sweet. There were even some adorable yearbook snaps with it!

It was midway through her senior year at Wolfson High School, and Ashley Greene had leaving on her mind.

“Christmas break, I just kind of left,” she says. “I didn’t really want to highly publicize that, yeah, ‘I’m going to California to try to become an actress.’ But it ended up getting around. Nobody can keep anything secret in high school.”

Her plan seems to be working out just fine.

Greene plays high school vampire Alice Cullen in the hotly anticipated hit Twilight and has signed to start work on the sequel. She’s modeling high fashion in CosmoGirl. And she’s giving steamy come-hither looks in the new Maxim, where the headline says “Blood Lust,” and big print features the teasing words: “Sometimes I wish I had a boyfriend.”

Summit Entertainment announced today that filmmaker Chris Weitz has been hired to direct the second film in the studio’s Twilight film franchise. The film, New Moon, is based on the second book in author Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster book series. The announcement was made by Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production.

Weitz, an Academy Award®-nominated writer, director and producer, has a proven track record working with a broad range of material dealing with youth-oriented characters, fantasy and action. As such, he has the potential to bring alive in New Moon the dimensions and depth that fans will demand in the next installment.

Feig stated, “We love Stephenie Meyer’s fantastic Twilight series. Thinking long and hard about how to turn New Moon into the amazing movie we know it will be, and working with Stephenie Meyer to find the right candidate, we are thrilled to announce Chris Weitz as director of the film. Chris very much understands the world of ‘New Moon’ and has the skill set required to bring the book to glorious life as a movie. We think he will be an excellent steward of Stephenie Meyer’s vision.”
